December Steering Meeting, plus a couple of notes

Hey everyone!
Don't forget-our monthly steering meeting is tonight! 7-9pm at Tommy's on Lane Avenue.

If you like listening to Doctor Who on the radio, BBC Radio 7 is replaying some of Paul McGann's earlier shows with India Fisher as his companion Charley. (Thanks, Mreen, for the link!) I'm not sure why the site lists Sylvester McCoy and Bonnie Langford as actors, but I think that is in error.

I made it back from Chicago Tardis! I had an awesome time! I've got pictures-hopefully I'll have them posted here before I head up to MN in a couple of weeks. I will post some here, and more in my flickr account (I'll post the link when I've uploaded them.)

Upcoming TV and radio broadcasts

Hey everyone!

First of all, don't forget-tomorrow is the last day you can purchase memberships for Chicago TARDIS at a discount! After the 15th, prices will go up to the 'at-the-door' level. You can purchase memberships online.

The Children in Need special aired today in the U.K.-with a Doctor Who bit! :)

Sunday, the next episode in the Paul McGann radio series airs on Radio 7:
Grand Theft Cosmos
(Special thanks to Mreen for keeping us updated with the radio broadcasts, and reminding us about the Children in Need special!!)

Monday, the next episode of the Sarah Jane Adventures airs in the U.K. on BBC One!
Mark of the Berserker, part 2

Speaking of SJA, Sarah-Jane.tv has an article about the next issue of DWM, #402-featuring Nicholas Courtney and Elisabeth Sladen on the cover. (aww, don't they look cute?) ;)

Speaking of spinoffs-if you were wondering what ever happened to the K-9 spinoff, Sarah-Jane.tv has a brief update about that too.

club updates! television! radio!

Well, I must have been half aleep when I wrote my last post (which is odd, because it was during my lunch break, and I didn't receive any snoring complaints from my cowokers... ;) ). I mentioned that the All Saints Day Halloween party was this Saturday, when in fact, it is not. The party is next Saturday, November 1st. Sorry about that!

I knew I forgot something in my last post-if you haven't had a chance to check out the Yahoo list lately, John posted a new poll for those planning on going to Chicago Tardis next month. Need someone to share a room with? Check out the poll!

Club updates

Well, the trick to posting on a regular basis after your internet is set up at your new place is to actually be AWAKE when you want to post! Ha! I think the adrenaline that kept me going over the past month is starting to wear off. ;)

Enough of my lame excuses-now lets get on to some club business!!

First of all-welcome to all of our newest members! Whether you are coming back to us after being away for awhile, or are delurking-you are all welcome here! :)

Next-Just a little reminder-Marcia has been asked by the "game show gurus" at Marcon if we would like to run another Doctor Who themed game show at 44. If there is any interest, please respond to her post on the Yahoo list. They would like to know by the end of the month if there is any interest, and Marcia told them she'd let them know no later than our next meeting. If you're interested, speak up!!

Finally, last, but not least! We will be having an All Saints Day Halloween Party this Saturday at Andrew's!!! Bring your leftover Halloween candies! Kids welcome - costumes encouraged! Enjoy some spooky fun with the Doctor Who crowd, as we eek one more party out of a holiday! *hee*

Festivities start at 2pm-join us for candy, fun, new episodes of the Sarah Jane Adventures and spooky-themed Doctor Who episodes! Hope to see you there!

meeting and moving marathon this Saturday!

Hi everyone!! Sorry for the lack of updates-I'm in the process of trying to move...again (yuck).

Saturday, Sept. 20th is our monthly meeting, starting at 12pm. This month it is at Carrie's house (she didn't loose power-yay!) If you need directions to her place, contact her and she will email them to you off-list.

After the meeting there will be a scifi marathon! Bring your favorite Science Fiction & Fantasy from anywhere, or any British show or movie. Everything will be viewed so that we can all share in the best! Try and keep it to one or two things (Carrie knows it's hard-but please try your best! She promises she won't scold you if you bring more than one. ;)), and so everyone has a chance- make them shorter if possible! If you don't have any, but know something in particular, let Andrew know and we'll try and show it. Keep your choices a secret and we'll try and have a surprising and fun day!

As for food, watch the Yahoo list for a poll from Carrie-she will be making sloppy joes and probably something else. Be sure to check her recent post for that, and other information-especially for parking!

Hope to see you there!

July steering meeting and a bit more...

Hi everyone! I'm back! I survived my trip home with only a few bruises, some muddy shoes, and about a gazillion mosquito bites...(well, not really, but it sure felt like it!) Lots of outdoor activities, but we still had time to have a family Doctor Who night. Best line of the night? My twelve year-old neice: "You got me hooked on Doctor Who." :-D (*goood, goood*)

Anyhoo, sorry for the late update here-I was having issues logging into Blogger:

Our July steering meeting is tonight!!! 7-10pm at the Rusty Bucket on Lane Avenue.
Come volunteer and decide where we're going as a club! We will be discussing details on our next couple meetings and events, as well as talking about current projects including recruitment, Logo and flyer design, Marcon 44 and more.

This weekend in the Whoniverse

*Editor's note: This is a scheduled post, as I am still on vacation. The information was correct at the time of this writing-but with the world of Doctor Who-you never know-something may have changed between now and then. 'wibbly-wobbly...timey-whimey...'* ;)

According to sources, Journey's End has a 65 minute run-time. It'll be interesting to see what Russell T. sends over to SciFi-hopefully it'll be edited to fit in a 90 minute time slot, rather than a 60 minute one. Less off the chopping block, please!

Has everyone seen the two BBC trailers for Stolen Earth? The second is pretty intense!

a note from your friendly editor. :)

Hey everyone!

Just a quick note-I'll be on vacation starting tomorrow. I've got a couple of posts scheduled to appear over the next two weekends for what's on Doctor Who-wise so the blog has some activity on it.

There are no meetings scheduled to happen while I'm on vacation, but keep your eye on the DWC yahoo list, just in case a last-minute meeting or group event occurs. ;)

Also, Jarrod needs our help! The registration of our club URL, www.doctorwhocolumbus.com, is set to expire next year. GoDaddy is currently running a special on registrations this month, with a pretty nice discount. If you are interested in chipping in, please see Jarrod's post on the DWC yahoo list for more details. Thanks!!

TAFN, if I don't get the chance later, I want to wish everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July!! Try not to blow anything up with fireworks-leave the blowing stuff up part to the Doctor. ;)

Club happenings this week

First of all, apologies (again) for the lack of post-Marcon updates-I think the longest I've been in front of my computer at home since Marcon has been maybe 15 minutes...

First off-we will be having an extra pre-concom steering meeting this Thursday, June 19th, from 7:00-8:00pm at Tommy's Pizza on Lane Avenue. Everyone who is going to the Marcon Vote meeting on Saturday, please try and make this quick meeting, so we can discuss and plan some of our strategy for the vote. Contact Andrew if you have any questions.

Saturday the 21st, there will be two meetings: Marcon post-con Vote meeting, from 1-5pm in the McKinley room of Hyatt Regency Columbus. Everyone is invited to listen and discuss how this year's Marcon Convention was. DWC did a great job with the video room, and we will be sure to discuss it's merits, as well as everything else at the con.

This is also the Vote meeting for next year's Chairperson. Anyone who was on staff for the convention (paid $10) is eligible to vote, and we really want to see you all attend and vote for Doctor Who Columbus's positions on Marcon affairs. Contact Andrew if you have any questions.

After the vote meeting, we will be having our monthly club meeting from 5-9pm, at a place yet to be determined. (Hopefully I'll have an update for you by the end of the week.) We will be meeting to discuss and plan for the future, as well as talk about the latest Doctor Who episodes! If you have any questions, please contact...yup, you guessed it-Andrew!! :)

But, wait! There's more!! We would like to have a club event/field trip this summer! If you haven't already done so, log onto the DWC Yahoo site, and vote for your choices. You can choose more than one, but please limit it to 2 or 3. If you vote for other, please email the group with your other choice, and, with current gas prices, please remember the closer the better. (sorry, no road trips to Vegas or Atlantic City, folks.) ;)

I'll be posting short reminders for the meetings later this week. :)

welcome!

Welcome to our newest members, Chris and Vicki!! I hope you guys enjoy being a part of our little group!

Well, another MarCon has come and gone. It was great seeing everyone! I had a great time. I'll have to post a con report soon-I still need to upload the pictures from my camera. Hopefully it won't take me over a month like it did last year! ;)

Hope everyone is recovering nicely-I didn't plan anything yesterday so I could catch up on sleep-I failed, apparently. When I came into work today, the first thing one of my coworkers said was, 'you look tired!'. LOL. :)

Marcon 43!

Marcon 43 is here!!! Are you ready? :)

If you have a prize for Doctor Who Jeopardy, they will be collected in the British SciFi video room. Marcia has suggested getting the prizes there by 6:00pm on Friday, so Andrew, Jarrod, and Gene have time to go through them.

Our panels include:
Friday, 11:30pm: Torchwood: Jack is Back!
Saturday, 4:00pm: Doctor Who Jeopardy
Sunday, 11:30am: Doctor Who and the Quarry of Doom

There is also a Doctor Who panel being lead by the Fan GOH, Kevin Standlee:
Saturday, 2:30pm: Doctor Who Fan Vids.

We don't have a set time for the All-Ohio Doctor Who Summit, so we'll have to play this one by ear-keep checking the video room and around the con for more details.

Hope to see you all there!!!

Don't forget-there is no new Sarah Jane in the U.S., and no new Doctor Who in the U.S. AND the U.K. this weekend!

Steven Moffat to succeed Russell T. Davies

Direct from the horse's mouth:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2008/05_may/20/who.shtml

Moffat will be taking over the reigns from Davies starting in 2010 with the 5th series.

All I gotta say is AWESOME! I have loved every one of Steven Moffat's stories in the new series, and I think it's great that someone else who really loves the show is taking over. Check out Moffat's "Secret Plan" (11th paragraph, I think)-when I read that, I laughed out loud, and one of my coworkers came over to see what the heck I was laughing about.

Congrats, Steven-you deserve it!!

Welcome to our newest member, Martha!! She was a member back in the 80s (welocme back!) and she was wondering if there was still anyone around from way back when-stop by and say hello!

Welcome, and steering meeting today!

Welcome to our newest member, Selina!! I hope you and your daughter enjoy being a part of our little group!! :)

Next-Marcia has asked those who have potential prizes for the Doctor Who Jeopardy game to please post to the group, even if you have already mentioned it directly to her-this way she can get a handle on what we have and don't have-and everyone will be able to see what we do have, so there isn't an overload of people bringing small stuff from their stashes, or unneeded special purchases for top prizes. She has a post started in the Yahoo group, and thank you to those who have already replied!

Finally, last but not least: we have a steering meeting today at 7:00pm!!

From Andrew:
We will be having a steering meeting today!(Thursday) from 7pm at the Starbuck on Lane Avenue across from the Tommy's Pizza we have been meeting at. We're meeting there because of the Internet access they have.

Anyone who didn't already attend the Club meeting this past Saturday, but is on staff for the video room at Marcon, should attend. We will go over more details, on how it will be working. and discuss prizes for the Jeopardy Game.

We are also planning on a Ohio clubs steering meeting at the con, probably on Saturday. Jarrod will be looking into getting us a room to hold it in, and Gene will be moderating it. We plan on discussing where all three clubs are headed, and what we need to know for the Convention next year. the exact time has yet to be decided but it will probably be at 2:30 on Saturday. Watch this space for details.

Thanks, Andrew!

Posts of Interest...
I came across this discussion on my LiveJournal friend's list. Apparently the BBC has sent a notice to a fan in the U.K. that she had to remove her Doctor Who inspired knitting patterns that she was posting on her site for free. The boingboing and open rights group posts that are cited in this post are an interesting read (don't forget the comments!), as is this blog post by TechnoLlama. Crafters beware!

TAFN,
Happy Who watching (and listening)!!!

club news and May meeting

First of all, welcome to our newest club member, Colleen!!

Next, our monthly meeting is this Saturday, May 10th, from 5:00-9:00pm. We will start at the City Barbeque on Henderson for dinner, then head over to Andrew's for some video watching, discussion of episodes and other Club business. We will also be finalizing plans for Marcon.

Speaking of Marcon, Andrew has posted the Brit Video Room schedule on the Yahoo lists. For the video room staff: If you haven't already done so, please email Jarrod ASAP so he can finalize the staffing schedule. Let him know if you have any restrictions or other commitments that might conflict with the video room. We are trying to give everyone 4 hours in the room and 4 hours back up, in 2 hour blocks or so. Also, since the video room is 24 hours, volunteers for the night shifts are greatly appreciated! :)

We are going to have a table in the video room, so if you have any decorations or flyers to help promote Whodom that you would like to share, please send Andrew an email. :) Any help with prizes for the Jeopardy game would also be appreciated. :)

If you are on staff, we are asking that you attend either our meeting this Saturday, or our steering meeting on the 15th to go over Marcon stuff.

Marcon is only 2 weeks away!!!!

Short reviews: Partners in Crime/the Fires of Pompeii

Warning: episode spoilers ahead!

Partners in Crime
Welcome season 30!! ;)
Overall, I found Parnters in Crime to be a fun episode-I have to admit, I wasn't sure I'd like Donna as a full time companion, but this first episode helped put to rest any doubts I might have had. I loved the way Donna and the Doctor just kept missing each other-and their conversation through the windows was hysterical-especially after they got caught.

I have to admit, though-the pace was a little slow for a season opener-as my "partner in crime" Jerm put it-the pace was more like one you would find in a mid-season episode. Not that that's a bad thing-not every season opener has to be fast-paced-it was still good.

Hey, would you think I'm weird if I said I want an Adipose to put on my desk? ;)

I'm notorious for spoiling episodes for myself. This season I have been working really hard to ignore spoilers, and, for the most part, have been pretty successful. Jerm always give me a hard time for knowing what's going to happen ahead of time, and didn't believe me when I said I was completely spoiler free for this episode...until the end...there was no way I could've faked my reaction. Jerm's was pretty good too: "I don't think my jaw can drop any lower!!"

Fave quote of the episode: "You're not mating with me, Sunshine!!" :-D

The Fires of Pompeii
Ahhh, the perils of time traveling. Changing history-when does it matter? When doesn't it? What is considered a 'fixed position in time?' It's enough to make your head spin. When the Doctor was explaning this to Donna, the first thing I thought of was the scene from the Aztecs when the First Doctor told Barbara: "You can't rewrite history!! Not one line!!" Not something we see very often, but it's nice to see it resurface.

Prophecies, foreshadowing-enough here to make fandom run wild with theories and predicitions. Ahh, I love it. ;)

I've often wondered, with the TARDIS translating, what would happen if someone was to actually speak the language being spoken. Now, thanks to Donna being just as curious, we know! "Me no speak Celtic". Donna: "Celtic?" the Doctor: "Welsh". (nods to both the Masque of Mandragora(yay!) and the Christmas Invaison). Also, I think I watched Mary Poppins just a few too many times as a kid-when the earthquake hit and the father yelled, "Positions!" the first thing I thought of was the Banks family yelling "Posts!" everytime the Admiral would set off his cannon in the morning and evening. ;)

Since the first two episodes were a bit longer than the standard 45 minutes, SciFi had to cut out alot more than usual with the first two episodes. One of the scenes I remembered they cut out was the last scene from this episode. We see the family the Doctor rescued a year later, going about their lives as usual (the daughter looked much better now, and acting like a teenager). They still have to remember to give thanks to the household gods-and you see that the household gods are in the shape of the Doctor, Donna, and the TARDIS. ;)

Another enjoyable episode for me. So far, I think this season is getting off to a good start.

calling all reviewers!

Okay, now that Doctor Who is in full swing here in the States, I was wondering if anyone in DWC would be interesting in writing up short reviews for the episodes for the blog. I am planning on posting my own reviews here, but I'm sure people will get tired of just reading about my own opinions. LOL. ;)

Just a few rules-please, keep them clean! Also-please give spoiler warnings-some folks just don't have a chance to watch the episode right away. I've found myself in that situation many times! ;)

Since the U.S. is only 3 weeks behind the U.K., I will be posting reviews for the episodes after they air on SciFi. If you're interested, send me an email(my email can be found in the DWC Yahoo list-I'll be posting about this there as well) or leave me a note in the comments.

Thanks!

Commentaries!!!
Commentaries for the series 4 Doctor Who episodes are Sundays on BBC 7. However, if you happen to miss one, they are also featured on the Doctor Who site-just check each episode page-you can subscribe to the podcast, or do a one-time download for each epiosde.

Also, by now I'm sure most of you have heard that the commentary track for the last episode of series 3 is different on the Region 1 dvds. Our set has commentary by the producers, whereas the UK set has the original commentary by David Tennant, Freema Agyeman, and John Barrowman. Currently, BBC America is making the original commentary available for download:
http://www.bbcamerica.com/content/123/commentary.jsp It's about a 47MB download. (Thanks Mreen, for the link!!!)

If you have any questions or need directions, call Jarrod (check the DWC Yahoo list for his contact number).

This is still followed by the actual Marcon meeting at Whetstone Library at 2:30pm.

Club news-and Urgent Marcon meeting!!!

Hey! If you happen to be reading this before 10am Sunday morning, Andrew just got word that there is going to be a Marcon ComCon meeting tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 24th) at 2:30pm at the Whetstone Park Library. If you want to see more Doctor Who at Marcon (including guests, etc.), then THIS is the meeting you'll want to attend!! Come and show your support. Please note-unlike our meetings which are usually a combination of work and fun, this is a business meeting, so only come if you really want to be a part of it all.

We will be getting together around 11am at a nearby location to do club talk at strategy. Jarrod should be posting more info about the meeting place on the DWC group soon. Andrew is planning on putting future ConCom meetings in the calendar well in advanced so if you can't make tomorrow, but would like to attend one, you will still have an opportunity to do so. :)

Speaking of Marcon, you all know that we will be running the Brit Scifi video room as well as the Doctor Who Jeopordy! game. We will be needing volunteers to help out with both-so keep an eye on the DWC Yahoo list as well as this blog for more info on voluteering opportunites. It is with YOUR help that make these a success!! :)

Speaking of Doctor Who Jeopordy!, Marcia has put together a lovely list of all possible categories, and the number of questions we have for each. We've done quite a bit to get started, but there is still much to be done. Many categories have few or no questions, so get your thinking caps on, and come prepared to one of our meetings!! Marcia suggested trying to organize more meetings to work on this. Andrew has suggested Thursday, February 28th at Tommy's Pizza on Lane at 7pm. (I'll post a reminder again next week.)

Now that we are at 100 members, it was suggested that we might have more interaction with a message board, and Andrew has created one for us!! Check out his post on the DWC Yahoo list for the link and to add your suggestions on how to improve it (if it even needs improving...) and to show your support!! :)

Last, but not least, to anyone who attended Gallifrey One last weekend: If you have any pictures and/or stories you would like to share on this blog, please feel free to email them to me at the email I use on the Yahoo list. Thanks!

Polling time!!!

No, I don't want to know who your favorite Presidential canidate is-these polls are more fun!!! ;)

We currently have 2 active polls running for DWC:

1. Where would you like the next DWC steering meeting (February 7th) to be? We are changing locations in order to facilitate the brainstorming of questions for the Doctor Who Jeopardy game we are creating for Marcon.

Poll ends February 7th.

2. We are having another video room at Marcon this year!! Go and vote on five, (and only five!!) shows that you would like to see represented in our British Sci-Fi and Fantasy TV room. Where are Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Sarah Jane in this poll, you may ask? Don't worry, they are already included in our lineup!! :-D

No end date (yet) for this poll-but the sooner the better, so Andrew can have some idea of what the most popular shows are.

Be sure to log into the DWC Yahoo group and vote in the polls! Thanks!!!

Potluck update!

Hey everyone!! Here's an update from John:

"For food and drinks for the meeting, I will provide my usual hummus and crackers. I also have some pop (both regular and diet) left over from holiday festivities. As for the rest of you, surprise the group
with a side dish, dessert, or drink of your choice. If we plan this out too much, it won't exactly be a potluck then! ;)"

How true!! :)

January Meeting and Potluck!

Don't forget this Saturday, January 19th is our monthly meeting! This month it will be held at John's from 5-10pm. Join us for the Christmas Doctor Who, Voyage of the Damned, as well as the premiere episode of Torchwood Season 2. This is a potluck event so please bring something to share.

John's posted directions to his house in the files section, and don't forget to vote in the poll to let us know you're coming!!

More details concerning the potluck as I get them... :)

Hope to see you there!!

The plan is to meet at Andrew's around 10am, then drive over to Indianapolis. Don't forget to vote in the poll to let us know if you're coming or not, and if you need a ride or can provide one. Thanks!!
