Are you Doctor Who's biggest fan?
Scifi.com is running a contest and the prize is a 30 gig video IPod with the first series already uploaded! Sweet! Answer at least 3 out of 10 trivia questions from the classic series, and you'll get an entry form to fill out.
Click here to enter the contest. (There's a small catch-you have to be a registered member of Scifi.com to enter, but membership is free) The contest runs from now until June 9th, according to Outpost Gallifrey. I've already entered! Good luck to all. :)

U.S. Ratings: The Long Game saw ratings go up from last week-averaging a 1.20 household rating with an average viewing audience of 1.4 million. That's up by about one tenth of a million from Dalek, which is the series's lowest rating to date.

There are so many links to articles with interviews with Elisabeth Sladen and her return in School Reunion.it will take forever to link them all, so I'm only going to link to a few of them:
Friends Reunited (actually, the end of this article has a link to two more from BBC Norfolk and BBC Breakfast.)
from scifi wire:
Smith, K9 Beguile Who Helmer
Who Revives Sarah Jane, K9

Also, if you haven't already read about it, Who's K9 gets own show. The animated, Jetix-ed, K-9! Whoa, doggie. ;)

from Outpost Gallifrey: Series 3 writers announced! Among them are Stephen Fry (yes, the Stephen Fry, who's episode was moved from series 2 to series 3) and Steven Moffat, who wrote 2 of my favoite episodes from series 1: the Empty Child and the Doctor Dances. Check out their news page for more on the series 3 writers.

Also from Outpost Gallifrey-the Rise of the Cybermen press release. (sorry, no direct link.) They have a link to a pdf file. Although I still think the new Cybermen kind of look like C3P-O on steroids, I am fully prepared to be freaked out by the metal men, just as the first scene where the Dalek recognized the Doctor in Dalek spooked me. It's amazing how a calm adult can become a frightened kid again in a matter of a few seconds. ;)

That's all for now-have a great Doctor Who weekend!
(and yay, Sarah Jane and K-9!!!) ;)

Tardisode # 3 School Reunion (feeling a bit giddy)

Okay-I have officially read too much about the upcoming episode, with all the interviews and stuff, to write a thoughtful review of the Tardisode for School Reunion as someone who knows nothing about the episode- I already know alot about the episode!!! ;) (Hey, what can I say-Sarah Jane has always been my favorite companion-I've been waiting for months for this!! I feel like I'm five years old again. ;) ) Yay, Sarah Jane!

*ahem* Sorry about that-those who are near me say that I tend to excite easily.
Tardisode 3 has Mickey showing some real initiative-he knows something is wrong with the school, but he can't access information because Torchwood seems to be blocking access-and he realizes that he's going to need help. I may be in the minority here, but I do like Mickey's character. Yeah, at first he's annoying, but I think he's really grown with the series-and I like that.

Gargoyles coming alive, flying around and turning into teachers? Sweeet. Wish high school had been that exicting for me. ;)

Don't forget-this hit's the newstands today:
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
(unless you have a subscription-then I bet you already have it-lucky ducks!) Anyone know of any stores that might carry DWM in the Cleveland area? I'd like to pick up a copy. Thanks! :)

Oh, and because I can't help it: Yay, Sarah Jane!. :-D

Tooth and Claw Review (Possible Slight Spoiler)

From our British Correspondent

After the first visit to an alien planet for the new series in last week's New Earth, this week's episode finds our two time travellers in Victorian Scotland. Trying to take Rose to an Ian Dury concert in 1979, the Doctor instead puts the Tardis down in 1879, bang next to a coach carrying Queen Victoria herself, heading to a manor house that just happens to have something interesting in the cellar...

Overall, Tooth and Claw is loads of fun, fast-paced and scary. On the plus side of the ledger, the two leads are, as always, in fine form, and Pauline Collins make a fiesty Queen Vic, and Euros Lyn's direction is flashy but not distractingly so. I should also make mention of the CGI work on the monster of the story. Very impressive. If there are any negatives, one that stands out for me was the somewhat flippant attitude by the Doctor and Rose throughout the story. I might be in the minority on this point; however, it is actually pointed out by one of the characters within the episode and in such a way that we should possibly expect it to become more of a plot point later in the series. On that level, I'm fine with it, but it is a bit jarring at this point. Other than that, the fight sequence that opens the episode was edited a bit to quick for my taste, but Jet Li or Jackie Chan were nowhere in sight, so I won't make a big deal out of it.

Another excellent episode. Next week: Sarah and K-9!

Tardisode #2: Tooth and Claw first impression...

I've decided that I'm going to write about my first impression of each Tardisode as they are available online. Since it's not intended to give the entire plot away, hopefully these will be somewhat spoiler-free. This one is a little late, but since the episode hasn't aired yet...

In my opinion, the best horror movies are not the ones that are high on the blood and gore factor, but high on the suspense factor, where we don't see the monster right away-but we see what's going on through it's eyes. That's what makes my skin start to crawl. And that's what we are greeted with...if the Tardisode is any indicator, this may be creepier than the Empty Child.

No wonder the kiddies gave this episode a high fear factor rating!

1. New Earth

Ahhh, with tonight's episode, we have reached the halfway point in the first series of Doctor Who here in the US. For those new to the series, what do you think? I hope you're enjoying it!! :)

U.S.A. ratings: Unfortunately, Dalek experienced the lowest ratings so far in the series, with a 1.17 household rating with an average viewing audience of 1.3 million viewers. However, Outpost Gallifrey points out that last weekend was a holiday weekend, which could explain the drop in viewership. (I know I didn't get the chance to watch it until Sunday, since I was busy with Easter related stuff all weekend)

Got an episode somewhere on tape that hasn't been released on dvd or video yet? Turn it in to the BBC, and you could win a full size replica Dalek!!! The BBC is currently looking for missing episodes of the earlier Doctor Who stories (hey, I'd really like to see Power of the Daleks if anyone has that episode lying around collecting dust! ;) ) Click here to read more about the story-there is also a link to the Blue Peter site which has all the details of the hunt. :)

Syfy Portal has a couple of interesting articles about the second series of Doctor Who:

Enter the New-New Doctor!
(WARNING: Major spoilers for the episode New Earth) Read at your own risk!

The Surreal Experience of Playing Doctor Who
This article wasn't too bad on the spoilers, although there is one paragraph that I wish I hadn't read...dunno if it means anything or not, but I though I'd warn you just in case. It's the paragraph right after he talks about working with Elisabeth Sladen-it's just the one paragraph-I dont' know how you read, but if you can ignore a paragraph in the middle of an article-enjoy! (or, if you don't care about spoilers-read it anyway!! Just don't say I didn't warn ya. LOL. ;) )

New Earth Review (Spoiler-Free)

From our British Correspondent

If I were to sum up New Earth, the first episode of the new Doctor Who's second series, in one word, it would be 'fluff'. Not in a bad way, mind you, but coming off the dramatics of the last series that's how is seemed to me. If I were to describe the storyline in detail (which I won't to avoid those dreaded spoilers), it would seem quite weighty, similar to, say, The Empty Child, but its various plot threads move along at a rapid pace, giving it that fluffy feeling. In fact, after it was over, I couldn't quite believe that this episode was as long as those from last year. But remember, Rose started last series in similar fashion, so it's hardly a harbinger of some impending doom. Stronger episodes are on the horizon, and soon by the look of it.

As for the cast, both David and Billie are in fine form, with Ms. Piper having to stretch a bit(and succeeding, of course). The Doctor is far more in control here than in The Christmas Invasion, no OTT histrionics or the like. I'm looking forward to seeing how Mr. Tennent does with a meatier story.

Overall, a good if not spectacular start to the new series.

U.S. ratings for the episode World War Three have turned around a slightly downward trend. With a 1.42 household rating (up two-tenths of a point from last week's episode), and 1.6 million viewers. Yay! So far, the End of the World has the highest rating here in the U.S..

The BBC has confirmed that the third episode, School Reunion, will air in the 7pm timeslot. There is also a link on Outpost Gallifrey to an interview with Elisabeth Sladen on her return to the series (April 13th tv series news-it's a link to a pdf file.)

If you get the chance, check out the homepage for the new series-got an ailment? You can be diagnosed by the Sisters of Plenitude!

Happy Doctor Who viewing! ;) Have a great weekend!!

Doctor Who in the news...

Tim Bennett, a writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, has written an excellent article about Doctor Who in yesterday's Sunday edition.

And it's not just a small blurb in the corner of the arts section-it's a full page article!

Here are the links to each part of the article-I'm not sure how long they are available online-but you don't need a subscription to the website to view them. (As far as I can tell, anyway).

Here's to you, Doctor Who (and all of your regenerations)

Enjoy!

Doctor Who news

Series one in the USA:
Fridays, 9pm EST on the SciFi Channel
Current episode:
5.World War III

Previous episodes:
4.Aliens of London
3.The Unquiet Dead
2.The End of the World
1.Rose

Series Two in the UK:
Saturdays, at 7:15pm GMT on BBC1
1. New Earth will premiere on April 15th.

The BBC has confirmed that the second episode of series 2, Tooth and Claw will also air in the 7:15 time slot (just in case the live football match that proceeds it runs over).

U.S. ratings: from Outpost Gallifrey: Aliens of London had a 1.20 household rating with an average viewing audience of 1.5 million viewers. This is down from last week's episode, which had 1.55 rating. Over all the series has lost 21% in household viewers and 16% in audience average since the broadcast of Rose. 0.65 million views tuned into the rebroadcast of the Unquiet Dead at 8pm last week.

Other things of note:
SFX magazine has a joint interview with David Tennant and Billie Piper. I thought it was interesting what they thought about working with Elisabeth Sladen. Tennant said that it's interesting how the episode works-if you know about Sarah Jane Smith, you watch the episode from the viewpoint of the Doctor. If you are new to Doctor Who, you watch from the viewpoint of Rose. He said that it was also relected in their own experience, because he grew up watching SJS, and Billie didn't know who she was. (Ok, I am a bit biased here-since Sarah Jane Smith is my favorite companion-the is much more in the interview, so check it out!) Have I mentioned that I can't wait for this epiosde?!? ;) LOL.

Canada will be airing the second series of Doctor Who sometime this fall. Also, Canada's CBC network announced that it will become a co-production partner on the spin-off series Torchwood. They have already done this for the main show, and will continue for a third series.

This Sunday is Doctor Who night on BBC3. It kicks off at 7 with a brand new, hour long edition of Doctor Who Confidential, followed by the Christmas Invaision and to finish off the night, a special repeat of the 2003 documentary the Story of Doctor Who written for the 40th anniversary. Oooh! Those lucky Britons! :)

That's all for now-until next week!

"Think You've Seen It All? Think Again."-Trailer Review

Last week, the first trailer for the upcoming second season premiered on the BBC. Modeled after last year's excellent "Do You Want to Come with Me?" preview, the new spot opens with the 10th Doctor telling the viewer that if they thought the first season was amazing, just wait until you see what the second one has in store. And judging from what follows, the upcoming season will certainly top last year.

We're shown quick clips from most of the episodes of the first half of the season (one episode seems not to be represented). Although somewhat dominated by New Earth, the opening story of the new season, we do get a good taste of School Reunion, Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel and especially Tooth and Claw, with it's flying Shaolin monks and amazing CGI werewolf. The Girl in the Fireplace is the only early story not featured in the trailer, although a few clips from it can be seen in the preview from the end of The Christmas Invasion.

Overall, the trailer isn't quite as effective as last year's, but it does do an excellent job of whetting the appetite for the second season. April 15th can't come soon enough.
