A quick word!

Hi all,

Just a quick note from your friendly editor. :) I will be on vacation starting tomorrow, so there might not be another update until after Christmas. I'm hoping I'll have the chance to update the blog during that time, but when you're staying at a house with 4 kids and 3 dogs, things can get a little crazy (especially with Christmas only being a week away...)

Don't forget!! Voyage of the Damned airs Christmas Day!
Don't let crazy Doctor Who rumors get the better of you! ;)
Watch out for Cyberman, Daleks, etc...
Oh, and for Pete's sake, don't let another ship crash into your TARDIS!! LOL. :-D

Happy Holidays, everyone!!!

Hey guys-just a quick note:

I haven't been updating this as much as I'd like to this month-and I know I've been late on several regular updates-for that I apologize. This October has been unusually busy for me, and I've been under the weather (the only thing I hate about this time of year. ;) )

I'm hoping to start posting more updates about gatherings outside of our usual club meetings, plus I have a few, (hopefully fun!), ideas for the blog. Until then, please bear with me! :) Thanks!!!!

As always, if you have anything club related you would like mentioned on the blog, feel free to send them along!

Brainstorming for Marcon 44

Hey all! If anyone is interested we will be getting together at Rusty Bucket on
Lane on Thursday around 8pm. We want to brainstorm about our ideas for Marcon's theme for next year (Marcon 44 in 2009).

We want to put a fairly thorough proposal together, and type it all up
so it can be submitted to Marcon ConCom at their next meeting Sunday
the 21st. Ideas include a reunion theme, so think of what we could
celebrate in 2009, and how Marcon could put it together...

As usual, we will probably retire to Andrew's house afterwards if
anyone is interested in watching new Sarah Jane adventures, etc...

Hope to see you there!!

SJA: Revenge of the Slitheen, parts 1&2 (no spoilers)

A review by Andrew:

Without giving it all away. I think it was an improvement upon the Invasion of the Bane. A decent story, I prefer the acting, and writing of this one. Nice to see another side of the Aliens, and they should make a good action figure out of the one. I prefer Clyde to Kelsey. Kelsey was an annoying twit, and Clyde seems a bit more intelligent, if otherwise much the same character. Episode 2 aired the same night on CBBC and so putting the two together made for a good complete story. There is another first episode "series setup" scene in the epilogue that you see in most first episodes laying the groundwork for the series direction, I prefer it's take on it to the one in Invasion of the Bane.

The trailer for episode 3 looks great, and I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks, Andrew!

If anyone else from DWC would like to submit their reviews for SJA (or Doctor Who and Torchwood), feel free to send them along! (My email can be found in the DWC Yahoo group).

WhoNA in Indy!!

from Andrew:

Last week on Tuesday, some of us went to Indianapolis to visit
WhoNA.com 's warehouse.

Andrew, Jarrod, and Greg attended, and we finally left around 10:45am.
After 3 hours, it wasn't to hard to find, just a few blocks from the Indy airport, in a business park.

They don't have a store per se, but they have a backroom warehouse, and a front office.
The warehouse was 20ft by 30ft and had standard grocery store shelving, but on the top shelf, and extending all the way to the ceiling were cases upon cases of DW toys and figures. They had 2 whole aisles of figures, one for books, and another for CD's, DVD's and other stuff.
They also had a set of display cabinets where they showed off the whole line of DW stuff, and some rarities from their own collections. They also had a DW Pinball machine, which was set to freeplay, and did we ever!
Overall it was a great time, and we plan to go back again when the time is right.

Sounds like everyone had a blast-thank you for the report, Andrew!!

If you're on the Doctor Who Columbus group, be sure to check out the pics here! (Login required)

Meeting of the Timelords, the lowdown

Hey everyone! First, my apologies for the delay in getting this up. I had the pictures uploaded about a week ago, and I just won't get into writing any excuses for not typing this up earlier. ;)

Second, I'd like to give a big Thank You! to John T. of Ohio Type 40 for sending me the pics and allowing me to use his summary of the day in this post. :)

Click on thumbnails for slightly bigger pics
August 18th, 2007
from John:

Daleks guarding the entrance

"Chris and I had the pleasure of attending The Doctor Who Columbus
event "Meeting of the Timelords". What a great time. We got a chance
to meet members from 3 other Doctor Who groups, and feel that we have
put in our part to strengthen the bond between 4 Ohio based Doctor
Who groups.

"We had lunch shortly after we arrived, which was a pretty simple pot-
luck style. Jarrod was manning the grill flipping burgers and cooking
the hot dogs. This was the time where we really got a chance to meet
other fans. I've learned in the past that Doctor Who and food go
together very well.

"After lunch, the entire group (I'm guessing
around 30 or so) sat down, and went over a number of key points.
Topics discussed ranged from membership recruitment, convention
rideshares, and the effort needed to bring Doctor Who back to other
PBS stations.

Outpost Gallifrey coming to an end

Perhaps some of us saw it coming, perhaps some of us didn't. Whatever the case may be, it looks like Outpost Gallifrey will be coming to an end as we know it very soon.

Some of you may recall Shaun Lyon (editor of Outpost Gallifrey) tried to end the site last year, but due to popular demand, and volunteer editors, he decided to keep it up and running. However, he no longer has the time and energy to run the site.

Rather than coming to a complete end, the four aspects of the site will branch out into new sites to be run by the folks who are helping Shaun run Outpost now:

DoctorWhoNews.com will be the new news site-Outpost's most popular feature.

The current Outpost Gallifrey forum will become doctorwhoforum.com

gallifreyone.com will remain as the primary location for the Gallifrey One conventions.

And last, but certainly not least, the Webguide to Doctor Who will be relocated to doctorwhowebguide.com.

Once these sites become live, I will update the links on our sidebar.

You can read more about the site ending in detail on OG's main page, www.gallifreyone.com.

More on the Scarifyers

Since I am sure I did them an injustice in my description from my last post, I wanted to share with you what was said about the Scarifyers in my BBC7 newsletter:

From BBC7:
"Scarifyers is a new series to BBC 7, and this is its first transmission on radio. To whet your appetite., I can do no better than to include this message from the writer of the series, Simon Barnard, who initially approached me with the project:

"The idea was to combine the Doctor Who 'UNIT' stories from the '70s with Quatermass, but make it faster, funnier and more accessible for a modern audience. The first Scarifyers story tells the tale of how Lionheart and Dunning first meet, and eventually form top-secret government dept MI-13. - It stars Nicholas Courtney ( Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart in Doctor Who.) The entire play was written for Nicholas, so it was very lucky he liked the script! He plays septugenarian crime-fighter Inspector Lionheart, a Bulldog Drummond-style fists-do-the-talking hero. Terry Molloy (The Archers) provides support as Professor Dunning. Dunning takes his name from the central character in M.R. James 'Casting the Runes,' and Dunning is kind of based upon James.
The play opens with him reading his students a ghost story at Christmas, for example. The difference is that Prof. Dunning is actually the world's worst horror author.. -Scarifyers is set in the 1930s because that was such a rich period for supernatural goings-on. The inter-war period was rife with spiritualism. Satanist Aleister Crowley was making headlines, Harry Price (the 'Ghost Detective') was conducting experiments into the supernatural and people actually believed this stuff. If you're going to write a supernatural series, then the 1930s is when to set it.""

additional note from me: of course, we all know Terry Molloy as Davros from the later Dalek stories.

Check them out! I listened to their Christmas special, the Yule Lads and quite enjoyed it. I can't wait to listen to the Nazad Conspiracy! :)

More party ideas

Hey there-I hope everyone is managing to stay cool! The 18th is almost here!!!

Mreen brought up an interesting idea, and I must apologize to her for not mentioning it in the blog earlier. (I'm sorry, Mreen!) She suggested having a swap table for trading and buying Doctor Who DVDs, CDs, and perhaps other Doctor Who related items as well. I think it's a great idea-what better way to find that one-of a kind, hard to find item that you've been looking for everywhere, then from a fellow fan who might just happened to have one? ;)

Interested? Let us know!!! :)

Meeting of the Ohio Timelords! Update #3

Hey guys!!! The big all-Ohio Who bash is THIS SATURDAY!!!!

Here's a third update from Andrew!!!:

Is everyone excited?!!?

You should be!

We're going to have a great time at the August Cookout Party and
Meeting of the Timelords.

Right now the Weather channel is predicting 85° and partly cloudy, so
it should be nicer than it has been this week, (knock on wood)

We're still looking for some help in food, so if you're able to help
please do. Or if you can think of something else to bring, like DALEK
shaped cookies? then please let us know.
Right now we'd like to have some of the following:
Potato Chips/ Tortilla Chips
Brownies
Cookies
Crackers
Veggie Tray
Potato Salad
Fresh Salad (Lettuce etc..)
Pop Cans- Regular (coke/pepsi etc.)
Pop Cans- Other (mt. dew/sprite etc.)
Bottled Water

Please forward us your drink preferences on pop, and we'll make sure to
let the volunteers know.

Also, if you have any games, card, board, lawn, or otherwise please
help us out.
After looking around the neighborhood I found out I moved across the
street from a hidden park and unknown beach volleyball court too! If
you're interested we can play volleyball.

If you are bringing children, give us their ages and genders so we can
have appropriate activities and prizes =-)

We're also still looking for more folding or lawn chairs for the
backyard, and folding tables, please contact Jarrod if you have one and want to have him help bring it over this week.

Remember, if you are able, please come by on Friday evening to help
with the set-up. This event can be all the better if we all pitch in
and help each other. :)
Also, if you are planning on bringing anything non-perishible, and are
going to be helping set-up on Friday evening, bring it along then, so
we'll be ready for the big day.
The set-up will be on Friday August 17th starting at 6pm and ending
when we're all done!

The main event starts on Saturday August 18th at Noon, and will
continue as long as we like! :)

Directions to the event, plus contact numbers/email for Andrew, Jarrod and the DWC should be posted in your local area Doctor Who Yahoo group, so be sure to check back there for more information!!! Thanks!!!

Doctor Who on the radio:
Moths Ate My Dr Who Scarf
from BBC 7:
This BBC 7 new commission by Toby Hadoke is a fantastic autobiographical piece, with universal appeal. It's told along the timeline of Doctor Who history, using smart comedic observations and excerpts from his teenage diaries. These include how he coped with being bullied, why he never got the girl, and later how being such a fan helped to actually get the girl, and end up with two children that are now the envy of every kid in the playground, all thanks to a geeky obsession. This is a two-part non audience version of Toby's successful 2006 Edinburgh show.
Friday at 5.30pm and 6am
Be sure to check it out in their Listen again section. The program will be available for one week after it airs.

Check out the weekly Doctor Who quizzes at Scifi.com!!
I took the first quiz, and got a perfect score. My rank is TimeLord. LOL.
A new quiz every week after each new episode!!!

Doctor Who at the SyFy Genre Awards Although this particular article focuses on Battlestar Galactica's nominations, I think it's worth the mention that Doctor Who is quite well represented too!! (see the end of the article for the complete list of nominations).

Also from the SyFy Portal: I was watching their little news alert ticker and this interesting tidbit caught my eye: the third series (season 29) episode, Gridlock is the 727th television episode of the Who Universe-this is one up from the Star Trek Universe, at 726. Woo!

from Outpost Gallifrey
Peter Tuddenham, has died at the age of 88 after a brief illness.
Peter's vocal talents could be heard in the Classic Who stories, the Ark in Space, the Masque of Mandragora and Time and the Rani.

Also included in this particular link-more information about the Jetix K-9 Adventures series and first glimpses of the Christmas special, Voyage of the Damned (so you may not want to scroll down too far, just in case their are spoilers. ;) )

Speaking of spoilers, I feel this last batch of links from the BBC could be considered major spoilers for the casting of the 2007 Christmas Special, series 4, and series 2 of Torchwood-you've been warned!!! ;)

Blink (NO spoilers)

Oh, wow! That was awesome! I love Steve Moffat-his episodes haven't disappointed me yet-and I'm really excited that he's going to pen another two-parter for the next series!!!

First, let me start off by saying I'm a big fan of watching movies that scare the crap out of me-not the blood and gore types, but the more suspenseful ones that keep you on the edge of your seat.

This episode was perfect for that.

It started off slow and creepy, with a few lighthearted moments thrown in here or there. Then the suspense just kept building until at one point I actually screamed and dove under the throw pillows on the couch- like I was 4 years old again watching something from the Hinchcliffe and Holmes era. (Man, that was good stuff.)

This episode even creeped my friend Jerm out-and it takes alot to creep him out. A LOT.

Bravo, Mr. Moffat, bravo!!!
DON'T BLINK!!

And finally, just for fun: the other astrology of the Doctors.

Marcon, part 2

Panels are always fun for me. Unfortunately I missed the Torchwood panel, but I did make it to the two Doctor Who panels. I always find the panels informative, and you have to give the panelists credit for trying to keep it as spoiler-free as possible(sometimes you just can't control what the audience says). It's a great place to ask questions, and to discuss and debate different aspects of our favorite show! Also, it's nice to be able to talk to people whose eyes won't glaze over after you've been talking about Doctor Who for only 10 minutes. ;)
(sorry about the fuzzy pic-I was laughing when I took this-thanks to the Dalek impersenation-which was very good, btw. I think we gave Kevin Sorbo, who was in the next room, a run for his money. LOL)

Saturday we had an all-Who club meeting. There's been talk about a unity of Ohio Doctor Who clubs-we'd still have our own clubs (DWC, Friends of a Timelord, and Ohio-Type 40). But we would all work together to organize big projects, help each other out with building up memberships, working on pledge drives, etc. It'll be interesting to see where all of this leads... :)

All in all, I had an absolutely fantastic time, and I hope more of you can make it next year! I love putting names to faces. :)

And finally, I'll leave you with the sign from our video room:

Don't forget DWC has a steering meeting next Friday, June 7th, and a monthly club meeting Saturday, June 23rd!

Marcon 42, part 1

First of all, let me begin by saying, I had a fantastic time!!!

I wasn't there long before I ran into some fellow Whovians! Finding one person with a sonic screwdriver is cool...but 4? That's a picture waiting to happen. LOL.

Ahh, where to begin? Well, first let me say that I think the video room was a huge success! Jarrod and Andrew did an awesome job putting it all together.
(<---Jarrod and Andrew, hard at work)
I'm glad I had the chance to be a part of it.

I liked the variety of programs in the video room-some I had heard of, but hadn't seen many episodes. Others I had never heard of at all, but now I want to check out more! (thanks, guys. :p LOL ;) )

Other members enjoying the show

I loved hanging out with everyone in the video room-it's always fun to realize that you aren't the only one in the room quoting Doctor Who word for word. ;) And what could be better than cramming 56 people in the room at 1:15am Sunday morning for a showing of Human Nature? :-D Fantastic!

TAFN, stay tuned for part 2!

what's on and what's coming to dvd!

Series 3/Season 29 in the U.K.
Saturdays, 7pm (GMT) on BBC One

Current episode:
7. 42

Previous epiosdes:
6. The Lazarus Experiment
5. Evolution of the Daleks
4. Daleks in Manhattan
3. Gridlock
2. The Shakespeare Code
1. Smith and Jones

Cool-episode 42 has a prologue.

Coming to Region 1 dvd on August 14th: Robot (yay!) and Survival. Check out the details and cover art. The UK versions of these stories are going to be released at the end of this month. A little over 2 months-that's not too bad.

Speaking of UK dvds-two new titles have been announced for region 2: The Time Warrior will be released on September 3rd, and the Key to Time box set will follow on September 23rd. Although we already have the Key to Time box set, the Time Warrior is new to us (and about time, too!) Hopefully it'll follow the same pattern as the others and will cross over to this side of the pond later this fall. :) [BBC link]

A couple more links:
Jack's back!

Book bonanza Three new books involving the Doctor and Martha!

And finally...
Have you heard the rumor? There have been talks about a new Doctor Who movie starring Paul McGann as the Doctor. If the rumor becomes fact, the movie would be separate from the current BBC series. Hmm...although I wasn't a big fan of the 1996 movie, I have really enjoyed McGann's Big Finish audios. If it does happen, I'll certainly give it a go. ;) [SyFy Portal link]

TAFN, happy Who watching!!!
