Who news

Series 3/Season 29 in the U.K.
Saturdays, 7pm (GMT) on BBC One

Current episode:
5. Evolution of the Daleks

Previous epiosdes:
4. Daleks in Manhattan
3. Gridlock
2. The Shakespeare Code
1. Smith and Jones

The ratings are down in the U.K. Smith and Jones scored a record-breaking 8.2 million viewers last month, but last week's episode, Daleks in Manhattan, only scored 6.3 million. (However, it is still beating the competition!) Have the Daleks lost their touch? one writer asks. Well, I've got an opinion about that-but I'll save it for when I do my review.
[SyFy Portal link] Warning: contains minor spoilers for Daleks in Manhattan.
-there's also some reader response to this article in Michael Hinman's SyFriday section.

More about series 3 coming to SciFi. :)
Outpost Gallifrey reports that series 3 will start on July 6th at 9pm.

Unitnews has highlights for the upcoming Doctor Who Magazine issue 382 and Doctor Who Adventures issue 28.

Last, but not least-the BBC has released some details on the U.K. version of Robot, including coverart! The dvd will be released in the U.K. on May 28th, 2007. Hopefully the North American version will follow shortly thereafter!

The Shakespeare Code (mild spoilers)

This will be a very, very brief review-because...well, I'm suffering from writer's block!!
Let's just say that I really enjoyed the Shakespeare Code. :) I don't know whether it was Shakespeare flirting with Martha, the many references to Harry Potter ("...just wait until you read the last book..."), or the banter between the Doctor and Shakespeare. ("I think I'll use that. That's someone else's.") LOL. It was fun to watch, and was one of those episodes where time just seem to fly right by-one minute the Doctor and Martha are stepping out of the TARDIS, the next they are back inside, the Doctor is making up another excuse to take Martha on another trip, and you're saying, 'awww...you mean the episode is over already?' You can't help but feel a little sad that you have to wait another week for a new episode. ;)

I think this is my favorite episode in the new season so far. (Grant it, only 4 have aired, but I really enjoyed this episode!) We've seen the Doctor and his companion meet a historical figure every season in the new series, and I kind of like it-remember, Doctor Who was originally supposed to travel to various points in history-but they started to stray from that when they realized that episodes with aliens and monsters got higher ratings. I think it's cool that Russel T. is revisiting that aspect of the show at least once a season. :)

Series 3 in the U.S.-it's official!!

Okay, so maybe we have known for a while now that series 3 would come over to this side of the pond-but it's always nice to hear the 'official' word. :)

The SciFi Channel announced that series 3 will start in July. This is the fastest turn-a-round for the new series yet-considering that series 3 won't end in the U.K. until June.

SciFi picks up Who year 3

Yay!

Who this week...and get the script!

Series 3/Season 29 in the U.K.
Saturdays, 7pm (GMT) on BBC One

Current episode:
4. Daleks in Manhattan

Previous epiosdes:
3. Gridlock
2. The Shakespeare Code
1. Smith and Jones

Sorry folks, I didn't have much time this week to look up some really cool links-most of the ones I saw (like a link to the Radio Times), seem to indicate that there would be spoilers-I just didn't have the time to check them out.

However, there is one really cool link that I came across just today (thanks to my Doctor Who screensaver! ;) ) Davies has given his blessing for the BBC Writers Room to put the full shooting script of Smith and Jones online for download!! Here's the link! Enjoy!

TAFN. Coming next week...reviews for the Shakespeare Code and Gridlock!

will there be new Who this week...?

Series 3/Season 29 in the U.K.
Saturdays, 7pm (GMT) on BBC One

Current episode:
3. Gridlock

Previous epiosdes:
2. The Shakespeare Code
1. Smith and Jones

There's a chance that Gridlock won't be airing this week. If the FA Cup semi-final takes longer than the usual 90 minutes, the BBC is going to postpone the new episode for a week, rather than air it later that night. [BBC link]

And now for some sad news. Another Classic Who writer has passed away. Dave Martin, who penned 8 classic stories including the Claws of Axos, the Three Doctors and was the co-creater of K-9, passed away earlier this week. According to reports, he had been diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year. He is survived by his wife and children.

New Who and a couple of links

Series 3/Season 29 in the U.K.
Saturdays, 7pm (GMT) on BBC One

Current episode:
2. The Shakespeare Code

Previous epiosdes:
1. Smith and Jones

Just a couple of links for the weekend:

Don't forget about the Doctor Who podcasts on the BBC site!
Here there be podcasts. :)

I also came across an interesting article on SyFy Portal by Michael Hinman:
The Next Ethan Hunt? How About John Barrowman?
Not directly related to Who or science fiction in general-but still, a rather interesting read.

Smith and Jones (possible mild spoilers)

I really enjoyed the first episode of series 3/season 29. Fast pace, but not too chaotic (well, except for the beginning with the Doctor and the tie, which made us blink and say, '...wha..?') As for season starters, definitely better than New Earth, but I'm not sure if it was better than Rose. However, one must keep in mind that Rose was the first episode after nearly 10 years of no new Doctor Who on our screens-so...hmmm...how best to describe my point? Expectations were higher, Davies and his team had to prove to the public that Doctor Who was worthy of being on our screens again after such a long absence (which he did!)

But I digress-as I said, I really enjoyed Smith and Jones. I think I'm going to like Martha as a companion-she's smart and has a level head on her. I just hope she's not too smart (like Liz Shaw-I was watching some of the extras on Inferno, and the reason why they decided to get rid of the character was she was too scientific, and when she and the Doctor talked, there was no one to question the science so it could be "explained" to the audience.) Hopefully the current producers won't see that as an issue. ;) Her family seems a little dysfunctional (to put it mildly), but hey-a 'normal' family would be kind of boring...

The new season is here, and I'm along for the ride!

Torchwood coming to the U.S.A.!

If you haven't already heard the news-Torchwood is crossing the pond! BBC America has obtained the first-run rights to air the spin-off. It will be a part of BBCA's 'Supernatural Saturday'. Also included in the 'Supernatural Saturday' programming block are Hex, Jekyll, Life on Mars, and Doctor Who (most likely the second series). It is rumored that this new schedule could come out as early as this summer.

Still no word on whether the SciFi Channel will obtain second-run rights to the spin-off. If they do, it'll probably be a watered down version of the show. For more on the story, check out the SyFy Portal.

More very exciting news! Doctor Who's third series premiere brought in over 8 million viewers in the U.K.!! 8.2 million!! Yay!
